Walking

Scotland has a long and sensible tradition of mutual tolerance between landowners and the public where access to open country is concerned, built on a history of courtesy and consideration, with very few exceptions. This tradition has proven to be a practical, workable and effective alternative to applying the full rigours of the law. There are few restrictions on walking, providing walkers behave sensibly and observe the country code. In particular, dogs must be kept on the lead where livestock are present. During the lambing season (April - June), the grouse shooting season (August - December) and the deer-stalking season (normally August - October) there may be local restrictions, and it is best to enquire about these. For your safety when hillwalking, do make sure that you are suitably equipped and experienced. A useful booklet is "Hillwalking in Grampian Highlands and Aberdeen", available from Tourist Information Centres. If a path or track is shown on the map and is clear on the ground, it can usually be followed even though it may not be a right of way. If there are restrictions on public access for any reason, there will normally be notices to that effect. In Scotland, the term "public footpath" can refer to one of three distinct kinds of path:

Scotland, unlike England, has no procedure for the formal registration of public footpaths and rights of way but local planning authorities often hold maps or lists showing the claimed rights of way in their areas which are available for inspection on request.
